Tho'ts on Leadership

Leadership is something that has so much said about it that Libraries and bookstores have entire sections dedicated to the topic. So I'm not about to think that I have much (if anything) to add, and certainly don't think that I'm going to wax profound on the topic here. However, Leadership is a topic worthy of our consideration - and it is to that angle alone that I will restrict my comments today.

Why do we need to consider the topic of Leadership?

  1. Because we must Biblically and legally submit to leaders. Like it or not, we all have leaders to whom we must submit. If they do not practice good leadership principles, it is more than just the "blind leading the blind." Our very lives are affected to the core by those we call our leaders. There are moral, spiritual, and physical implications surrounding every one of our leaders. Therefore, we should choose our leaders carefully - aware of these implications.
  2. Because we must Biblically and legally BE leaders. Again, like it or not, we all ARE leaders to whom someone else must submit. Our families have pecking orders, our jobs find us in charge, training, or somewhow leading others. As surely as those over us must necessarily impact us morally, spiritually, and physically, we also impact those we lead the same way. Therefore, we must choose our actions, words, and check our motives carefully.

Why do you think I am going down this road? Because we often choose our banks, our cars, and our homes more carefully than we choose our schools, jobs, mayors and political leaders. I am apalled at the way many call themselves parents and then don't lead their children into productive, morally sound lives (if their parenting is any example - divorce, living together, clubbing, quitting every job when the going gets tough, and bankruptcy). Spiritually, we are also not leading or choosing leaders properly. People choose churches (if they bother to look for one) based not upon truth and opportunity to worship and serve the Lord, but based upon their feelings and comfort and how much they enjoy the music.

Let me give you an example of how we lead our children astray by our example: Parents send their children to church the same as they do to school. That says to their children, "God is for kids, and one day, you, too, will grow up and no longer need the Lord." How down right silly! But millions are teaching through their example that very thing.

So, how's your leadership? How are your leaders?
