I've been reading a book (well, two, actually) for my M. Div. on preaching. I really enjoy reading these books because they are talking about my heartbeat - the Bible. After all, what is preaching if it is not about the Bible? Well, truthfully, it should not be just "about" the Bible, it should be "from" the Bible, led by the Holy Spirit, and all that. Preaching that is merely about the Bible is just opinion, and my opinion is worthless - God's is what counts!
Anyway, the inspiration, power, and authority of the Scriptures is everything. I've always stood by that. I've lived by that, and I am saved by that. What authority have I as a preacher without the Bible? None. What message have I as a preacher without the Bible? None. What purpose have I as a preacher without the Bible? None. Millions of people make their living doing something other than reconciling people to God. But my mission in life is to do just that. How can I do that without the Bible? I can't.
So to all of you who think I'm too immersed in the Bible, I say this: How can a person who hopes to heal people of diseases do so without studying medicine? How can a person who hopes to practice law do so without studying the law he practices? As a man of God, I must study the only revelation of God available - the Bible. There is no other. I, we, you, must be saved by the Bible way, and there is no other way. I cannot be too immersed in the Bible. The problem is that too many are not immersed enough in it. What hope have you to know God than through the Bible?
