Humanity is NOT intrinsically "good." While there may be some good things about mankind, that does not make mankind "good." Case in point - the BTK Killer in Wichita, KS - one of the cruelest and most deranged serial killers in history. He is a "family man" - married with kids. He would commit cold-blooded murder, and come home as anyone would from their daily employment. His kindnesses to his neighbors, family, friends, and co-workers don't make the evil go away. His gifts to charities and non-profit organizations don't make the evil go away. He may do some "good things" but that doesn't make him "good."
Mankind is continually killing, raping, plundering, stealing, cheating, and profiteering off of the weaker among us. We take advantage of one another's weakness, trust, and kindnesses in order to exploit and work our advantage to climb the social ladder. The "King" is the one who has climbed over all the rest of us. We are not good, nor are we getting better.
Wars, rumors of wars, and all sorts of scandalous news stories are being blasted over the airwaves and zipped through the Internet 24-7-365. If mankind were getting better, these stories would be increasingly hard to find. The news would be about more and more good deeds.
However, what is trendy today would have been an outrage fifty years ago. The gore and gruesome is everywhere: our kids' video games, our public airwaves, our local theaters. Crime is now entertainment, and cruelty is fun. Sexual promiscuity is no longer taboo, now it's traditional. Divorce has become nearly a rite of passage as most people over 40 have been divorced at least once while our young adults don't even consider marriage without first cohabiting.
No, I can't say mankind is good. There may be some folks who are decent, moral, and the like, but they are becoming an anomaly in America. And Christians are not exempt. In fact, it has become almost strange to find a decent Christian in our communities - for those claiming Christ are falling for the same folly as those outside of Christ - making me ask: Where is the conviction of the Holy Spirit? Are these folks truly saved?
I will say this, however. Those I know who have truly accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior are moving away from this filth into greater sanity, decency, and goodness. They are becoming kinder, gentler, and true to their Lord and helpful to their neighbors. Jesus is still in the saving business, and is still saving people, one heart at a time. Has He saved you? How does your life show that?
