Saw on FOXNews (tv) a Democratic senator say that George Bush could not have been a better friend to democracy and freedom than he has in the past 10 days – referring to Bush’s actions in regard to the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict in the Middle East.
If I remember, Democrats said the same thing following 9/11, and on into the Iraq thing. But it wasn’t long until they changed their tune and said intelligence was skewed. What will they do to turn against the President now? (image placeholder)
I’ve been preaching a series on the Sermon on the Mount, and the last ½ of Matthew 6 is a striking word against covetousness – that is, desiring what you don’t have that is not yours to have…
Covetousness permeates nearly every American. It is that nature that our advertising agencies depend upon. “You NEED… our product.”
In our day and age, the commonplace is rarely considered to be sinful. We think of sin as something that is abnormal, deviant, or otherwise reprehensible. The last thing we think of when we define sin is to define it as that which is contrary to God and God’s nature. But that’s the standard by which God will judge our sinfulness – how far contrary we are to Him and His nature. He has already assessed each man, woman and child - Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
A. W. Pink’s exposition on the topic does a great job of bringing out the sinfulness of covetousness. It is a lack of faith, first of all. Covetousness is not trusting God with goodness and ability to provide. Covetousness is also wicked unbelief – more than simply not trusting, it is not believing that God’s abilities are far greater than the insurance company’s, or greater than our savings, or greater than our physicians and science. Coveting the best the world has to offer sinfully doubts God. Our governments covet the newest and greatest and largest weapons, armies, and scientific achievements.
I wonder, then, if it is the success of our President that makes these liberal Democrats trump up charges – even when the evidence is not there. Are they being covetous?
