"I have exalted one chosen out of the people." -
Psa_89:19With a last name like "Yount" I am often thought strange and alone in the world of relations as there are so few with that name. No one has heard of it, fewer can spell it on first hearing. There are no prominent people with that name to make it famous... well there is one. Robin Yount, MLBaseball Hall of Fame member, played shortstop for the Milwaukee Brewers for many years. I can say that there's someone famous with my name. I only wish I was in his will - that he knew me and I knew him. As it stands, I know OF him, and he doesn't know of me. What hope have I of having him for kin? None if he is kin of hope and help.
Well, this verse today tells us that we have an exalted kin in Christ. We have a brother in heaven as Spurgeon excitedly tells us. I may be poor, destitute, and without much hope of being lifted, I do have the hope of heaven - for that's where my brother is. He is a rich brother, and powerful. He is chosen from the people that His people might have Him on their side. He won't let me suffer, go needy, or be lonely while He is on the throne. He loves me, and He is my brother!
He also, "being tempted in all points like as we are, yet without sin," can have true and understanding compassion upon me when I am tempted, in pain, weak, disappointed, weary, and poor. He's been there, having been one of the people. Yet, his experience was far richer having been more strongly tempted, deeper in pain and poverty, more weary and disappointed than I will ever be. Still He loves me and cares for me. He will lead me on to His heaven - even though it may take me through the valley of the shadow of death. He has already trodden there, and He has not been defeated.
Take courage! Royal feet have left a blood-red track upon the road, and consecrated the thorny path for ever.
-- Spurgeon
