True Communion

Passage:  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.  James 4:8

Main Point:  Make it a point to seek God - and you will be with Him.

  • Promise?  God will be found by those who seek Him.
  • Lesson?  Is it not good to ALWAYS draw near to God and so to have God ALWAYS drawing near to us?
  • Command?  Seek the Lord - for then you have the Lord seeking you.  This is a conditional promise - but a marvelous one.

Devotional:  Our church will be celebrating "Communion" this morning.  Most people think of communion as a religious rite, an ordinance to the church, or a special service.  Christ calls it a fellowship supper.  The early church called it a "love feast."

But our verse today describes a different communion - more like the Last Supper than today's rituals.  The Lord was in communion with His disciples.  They were physically communing with one another, secluded and focused on one another.  They shared the meal and the conversation.  They were spiritually communing with one another, united in spirit and sharing the spiritual things Jesus was offering - each  disciple with equal wonder.  Their status of being alone with one another is not to be overlooked either.  The distractions of outside life were not present in this moment of communion.

Their seclusion, sharing and status (alone together) reveals the communing we enjoy each time we draw near to the Lord and He with us.  Let us do so in prayer each day.  Let us relish the time with delight, anticipation, joy, and with deliberate effort, make it the first thing we do each day.  We should make it an EVERY DAY communion to draw near to the LORD.  Then we will be communing with the Almighty!  We will get to share with Him our Heart, and be open for Him to share with us HIS Heart! THAT, dear friends, is what TRUE COMMUNION is.
