I know that this topic is highly personal - to ME! But I need to share with you (even if no one is checking in) a thought about our society, our faith, and our personal behavior.
It struck home to me this morning as I was reading 1Samuel 19-21 - the story about David, King Saul (who was trying to kill David out of a jealous rage) and Saul's son, Jonathan - who happened to be David's best friend. Jonathan is the focus of my thoughts today, and his actions ought to be emulated by every Christian across the globe.
Jonathan stood to lose the kingdom, even though he was next in line as the son of the King. Standing up against the King in favor of the "enemy" was bad enough, but when that King is family is a "double-whammy." This is going agains "political correctness" and being prepared to pay the price. Doing it for a friend is good, but doing it for the innocent and slandered is best. Too many people today are slandering one another, and no one is defending them as they ought lest they draw fire.
Christians need to stand up and defend the helpless, the slandered, the dehumanized of our society. We need to have the spine to draw that fire and expose its injustice. The unborn, the elderly, the crippled are under attack today. They are helpless, slandered and dehumanized. The passing of the pope has taken the headlines away from the pathetic unjustice done to Terri Schiavo. How those who loved to kill her are glad that the attention of the world has shifted. May we bring it back to them. And it may happen before too long - Doctors are now targeting unborn babies suspected of having Down's Syndrome for abortions. I would give you the link to the article on CNS News, but it was yesterday's news, I can't find the link any more. But it was there.
Why am I crying out about these things? Because our lives are valuable, worthwhile, and no matter our physical condition, we all are important to our society. The character trait of Jonathan was rare in his day, and is rare in ours as well - but it is also a character that is noble, good, and productive to our lives. How can we look at the types like Jonathan and merely wish we were like that? How can we possibly justify our decisions and our indecisions which are contrary to the character of Jonathan in order to excuse our baser characters? We have no excuse, Christian. We have the very power of God through His Holy Spirit, and we MUST become a Jonathan in our world today!
