As Christians, it behooves us to show love, patience, understanding and compassion to other people. But, as many outside the church will tell you, Christians seem to be the only army in the world that shoots its wounded. I have been startled recently by accusations, assumptions, and other hurtful attitudes that result from miscommunication and a genuine expression of love and acceptance of people that are somehow different from ourselves. As a pastor, it breaks my heart - especially when it happens in this flock under my care.
Our weakest members should be our prized members, not the objects of our ridicule, discipline, and chastisement. We should nurture, not gnash out at them. We should love them, not leave them. They need us, we also need them. It was to these weak and helpless people that the Lord came to save. Will we not also reach out to them rather than lash out at them?
So, in our community, we need to become the kinds of people that forbear with the weakness of others, indeed, counting it a privilege for the glory of Christ - who in the greatest way continues to forbear our own weaknesses all the time.
