I was looking over my bookshelf the other day, taking a mental inventory of all the books and all the subjects covered. I have a few books on the subject of "Bible Study" while I have a lot of books which might be classified as "Bible Studies." Hundreds of books are written to teach us the Bible, but few are written to teach us HOW to study the Bible. Could this be one reason so few actually DO study their Bibles on their own?
I grow weary of others who try to lead me through a Bible Study of their choosing. I don't mean weary of sitting in small groups studying together. I mean in my own private time, studying another's insights makes me weary. I used to enjoy it - but have grown out of it. I used to need it - but have begun to write my own. And in that is great joy for me. I don't even share my own with others (though I would be glad to should anyone want it). However, the personal feeding on God's Word is for me very enjoyable.
For all my friends and fellow believers reading this, I say to you - make personal Bible study a daily, private practice which is a priority in your life. If you use another's Bible Study guide, that's great. But sometime, learn to study the Scriptures on your own, digging deep, meditating and memorizing verses, and practicing the application process in your life. You will be rewarded so much more in your soul - and you will find that the work will become compelling, joyful, and exciting.
I am glad that South Main Baptist Church has decided, as a part of our strategic plan, to implement a "Discipleship Institute" where specific classes are given to students to help them in their spiritual life, church life, and daily life. One of those classes will be essentially "How to Study Your Bible - Bible Study Techniques." For those who find the Scriptures confusing, complicated, or antiquated, this class will undo all of that and help you to open your Bible with confidence and competence. The mysteries will be unveiled (most of them), the marvels will be unending, and truly your soul will be feasting on the abundant Table of the Lord. I hope you will try to join us.
