Thoughts - those things we think when we aren't thinking we're thinking. It's these thoughts that often plague us spiritually - for they are often enough the thoughts that come from the enemy, convincing us of things that aren't true.
You know what I mean - thoughts like "What is truth, anyway?" or "I wonder if anyone's looking." Such thoughts occur to us on all too regular a basis. And we listen to them as if we hadn't even thought them. We simply assumed them. But when they are voiced, it becomes clear how boldly they stand contrary to the Scriptures, and of course, the Living God of the Bible. Such a contrast then means they did not come from God. His Holy Spirit did not put such thoughts into our heads.
But what's the big deal with these thoughts, you might ask. I'm glad you did. It is the subtle thoughts that breed error, discontent, and discouragement. They undermine our faith, rob us of our joy, and convince us to act in ways that are against and not according to the Lord's Will. They lead us to heresy, hypocrisy, and unholiness. They give us a sense of spirituality while robbing us of the power of God. Such thoughts, brought to their natural conclusions have bred the church embracing homosexuality and other immoral actions (i.e., living together out of wedlock, defending guilty criminals, etc.). Our churches have lost their power to proclaim the gospel because so many have forgotten just what it really is. Bibles are being written (or more accurately "re-written") to take out all offensive phraseology and material. People are capitulating to the secular pressure to be silent about Jesus in the work place. Entire ministries are destroyed through immoral acts uncovered. Pastors are fleeing the pulpit at record pace in America. All of these things are the direct result of subtle lies from Satan.
It is for this very reason that our Savior, Lord, and Shepherd has lovingly placed in His Word the admonition to "take every thought captive to Christ." If we were to do that, comparing our every thought to Christ and His Thoughts as revealed in His Word, then we would not fall for so many lies, we would not fail so many tests, and we would not forget so much Scripture. Our own lives would be marked with peace and power from on High, hope and assurance here below, and victory in every endeavor for the glory of Christ.
Therefore, dear friend, please pay attention to those thoughts your are thinking when you think you aren't thinking!
