The news today is full of great conversation pieces and food for thought. (I wish food for thought was healthy, I could quit eating regular food and diet on that low-carb, low-calorie food for thought! Wow! That would definitely mean I would lose weight.)
Anyway, let me take the articles worthy of mention in some sort of order (the order I looked at them).
First off: The Houston Chronicle reports that abortion doctors might face the death penalty if they perform abortions on girls under 18 without parental consent and she's in her 2nd or 3rd trimester. The legislators who enacted a law had no intention of such a thing, but after it passed, it came to their attention that this law fell under certain capital murder cases. Now everyone, including the Texas Right to Life folks are saying that a legislative mistake has been made. Perhaps - but perhaps not. Abortion is murder - and pre-meditated murder at that. It's past time we Americans recognize that and our laws reflect that. Texas lawmakers may have accidentally passed the law, but that only means they accidentally did the right thing!
The U S Air Force has joined the ranks of the politically correct as they try to balance the religion issue in their ranks. In an article on the Gazette.com website entitled "Air Force guidelines on religion encourage sensitivity," the clear objective of the Air Force has been taken hostage to the desires of the liberal right, those who want to silence Christians and rob us of our freedom of speech and freedom of religion. The balance is not in silencing believers from sharing their faith, from praying in the staff conference room, but in equally promoting people based on job skills and abilities. When religion is used to keep someone from advancing, then religion is used wrongly. But when efforts to prohibit religion from being used wrongly only prohibit religion from being used at all, they have overstepped their bounds. And to demonstrate the liberal agenda, Rob Boston, spokesman for Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, did it best... He called them (the Air Force's new rules) a good first step. “If the word gets out that the kinds of proselytizing we’ve seen in the past won’t be tolerated, then it will have done some good,” he said. Seems to me that their efforts to stop Christians from sharing their faith should begin to backfire soon, don't you think? Their own efforts might be considered as "proselytizing" and should be stopped, right?
The Boston Globe reports that the extremely conservative, but very non-Christian governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney's Mormon faith might keep him from a successful presidential bid. In this rather long article, a good question is raised for believers: when do we side with those of other faiths? Would a vote for a Mormon be an endorsement of Mormonism? I believe that Mormons are very wrong about eternal issues, but very right about the moral issues of life on earth (except for their leanings toward polygamy). Their stand against abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, etc. are all very noble, needed, and noteworthy. But they are not trusting the only Word of God about eternal things and so are lost, spiritually speaking. They truly need saving. Our country, on the other hand, has rejected the Word of God on every issue. Would Romney be a "lesser evil"? I suppose, in the absence of a solid Christian candidate, I might be persuaded to vote for Romney - but I wouldn't be surprised if he fudged later in office! Without the genuine help of the only Spirit of God, the pressure to cave in will be victorious eventually.
Lastly, but on a similar issue - the Presidency - Fox News reports that Sen. Hillary Clinton is under a microscope as she seeks to jockey for the Democratic bid. Her liberal agenda may get it for her - as long as she can seem conservative, dedicated to her role as a Senator for now, and keep her nose clean and her mouth well-guarded. Why am I talking on this one? Because I would have every believer watch her as closely as her competitors are watching her. Our nation is headed down a God-given course through our own denial of the Lord - and that course is destruction. As surely as her husband led a willing nation down the toilet, she will do the same if she's elected. Apathy can make that happen quicker than anything. The silent Christian has voted for the enemy.
Hope the food for thought today fills you up. Have a wonderful day.
