Thots On Harriet Miers

Seems that the news is all abuzz about Dr. James Dobson's phone conversation with Mr. Rove about the President's SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) nomination, Harriet Miers.  Did you listen to Dr. Dobson's broadcast this morning?  You can hear it over the internet by clicking the following link: Another Look at the Miers Nomination    On the broadcast is a telephone interview with former White House Counsel, Kenneth Starr (remember Whitewater?).  Judge Starr's comments were particularly reassuring to me with regard to Mrs. Miers' qualifications and abilities to handle the position as Associate Justice of the SCOTUS as well as the excruciatingly and excessively grueling confirmation process.

Therefore, at the risk of getting ahead of myself, I want to begin to take a stand in favor of our President's choice.  One of the key reasons for my stand is the very real and observable phenomenon of Democratic support, however small.  While to most conservatives, this should be a red flag, and it would be to me as well, were it not for the explanation of their support: they don't know enough to stand against her, and without any negatives, they simply cannot help but support her.  Those, like Judge Starr, who know her well and are conservative, constructionist justices, are behind her praising her constructionistic approaches and stands.  Her stand on specific litmus issues is only speculated at this point, but her faith and practice would indicate a traditional rather than liberal decision.

The media hate it.  I understand that. But other conservatives are scared.  I wonder why?  Is it because she is not their first choice?  Some have said so.  Is it because they have not met her?  Some have said so.  But could it be that her LACK of track record of judicial decisions may be just the card to get her into that black robe?  Could it be that that is the open door the President and our nation need right now?  The non-responsive approach of Justice Roberts last month sets a wonderful precedent for her to take that same tact, and give the liberal establishment and media nothing to protest.  Once she's in, she can give them all the fodder for protest she wants, and the courts can be reigned in again through their own self-discipline (meaning conservative domination in favor of limited judiciary and constructionistic approaches to Constitutional interpretation)!

That, of course, doesn't end the fight for our nation's heart and soul.  No single person is our savior in that arena, except Jesus Christ, Himself.  When hearts of Americans turn to Him, then we will truly be saved.  But is this a sign of repentance at the high levels?  I'm not saying it is; I'm just asking the question.  If I were to answer it myself, I'd say emphatically, "NO!"  Why?  Because it only shores up a chink in the wall of our constitutional rights to express ourselves as faithful Christians in a land where religious liberty is purported to be so strong.  We Christians STILL need to support our governmental authorities and hold them accountable for their decisions on our behalf.  We Christians STILL need to stand for Christ in the marketplace and the home.  We Christians STILL need to share the Good News (Gospel) with those who either have not heard it or do not understand it.  And that is where the spiritual repentance comes - one heart at a time.  Repented and converted leaders such as our President and others on the SCOTUS, in Congress, etc. are STILL needed to lead this nation BACK UNDER GOD.  Therefore, I believe that this nomination, if confirmed, will be a significant step in the right direction.
