Thots On Heaven

How many times have I heard that old phrase, "Heaven will be boring."  That is a sign of ignorance on the part of the speaker - or is it more telling than that?

It could be ignorance.  Too many people know so little about heaven.  While the Bible reveals much about heaven, there are still many things we don't know about it.  After all, trying to describe heaven is kind of like trying to describe the beauty of color to a blind person.  It's simply so wonderful that words cannot explain the experience, and only experience can truly do it justice.  Therefore, what IS found in the Bible about heaven is woefully inadequate, thought completely accurate, in fully communicating the life in heaven.  Now, I'm not trying to say that the Word of God could be improved upon, or that it is incomplete, or not enough.  It is all of that.  I'm simply saying that, even if God would have chosen to write another book about heaven for us, it still would be just words to those of us who have never experienced it, so it wouldn't help us any more than what God has already revealed about it.  In fact, I believe that He's revealed all we need to know; He's revealed all we can comprehend; and He's revealed quite enough for our finite minds about His infinite Heaven.

It could be sin.  I thought about that just this morning, and bounced it off my wife.  I mean, think about it, don't some people think heaven will be boring because of all the sin they WON'T be able to do there?  Jane thought that was kind of harsh.  Perhaps, and perhaps it's true, even if it is harsh.  We have become lovers of sin and pleasure and not lovers of Christ.  Our entertainment excludes Christ.  Our passions are fleshly and not spiritual.  At least most people's are.  I confess to several unspiritual "lusts."  I love barbecued ribs and I love computers.  Ribs might be in heaven, but I won't need them.  Computers won't be there, and I won't need them.  So what's left?  It's ideas like that which make this seem harsh. Are ribs and computers sin?  Not in themselves, but they are when they possess me. But those who say that Heaven will be boring are those who want to do other things, and think that doing "right" all the time is a bore.  They look down their noses at those in their peer groups who do right and call them "goodie two-shoes" as if to say that being good is boring. Heaven won't have sickness, sin, or sorrow.  And to those who are jokesters at others' expense, heaven would be boring because the sin they love to practice won't be happening in Heaven (and those who love sin so will probably not be there, either).

So I think that people think Heaven will be boring because they either don't know enough about it or they love this life too much to give it up for heaven.  They'd rather live here and sin than live in Heaven and do good.  What do you think?
