Thots On The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments
Exodus 20:1-17

It is curious to note that of all the Ten Commandments, 9 are repeated in the N. T.  The only one not repeated is the commandment to honor the Sabbath.  Why is that?

Bible Commentator, William MacDonald says that it is because it is a ceremonial command, not a moral one (See his commentary on James 1).  I like his explanation for its clarity and simplicity.  He also points out that morality is common to all peoples – believers or not.  It is wrong to kill, to steal, to commit adultery…  All of these are wrong in any society because they are just wrong.  So the Ten Commandments are NOT the Ten Suggestions as some people would have us believe today.

So why does the ACLU want them off the walls of our Courthouses and other government buildings?  Their claim is that it’s all about religion.  It’s not.  It’s about corruption.  I mean they are corrupt and want to spread their filth throughout the USA, even the World.  If the ACLU gets their way, the US will fall for its immorality.

But let me get back to what I started to say.

I, for one, am glad that God has given me His Ten Commandments.  I didn’t learn these things were wrong because He did – but because He put them into my very being.  Committing these things doesn’t tell me they’re wrong – but just let someone do it to me!  That’s another story.  My own sense of justice and reason tell me it’s wrong.  Funny how that works.  So, the second commandment – love your neighbor as yourself – means that all the others after it are wrong.  Who would want a thief to steal from them?  What person would want to be cheated on?  …

When God gave me His Ten Commandments, my life was given borders and guidelines to help me relate to my neighbors, family, and co-workers.  He gave me a foundation of things I can expect of them toward me as well.  But the highest thing He gave me in these Commandments, is the rule of loving Him above all else.  Considering the protections and safeguards these Commandments offer, they are not restrictive, but protective – demonstrating God’s amazing love for me and the rest of the human race.  His ways are GOOD!

So the next time you think of the Ten Commandments, I hope you’ll consider them to be a blessing to you, your family, and your community.  Who would legitimately want a blessing to be stripped away just because someone wants to remove God from the public eye?  They’re robbing us of a blessing, not blessing us with their robbery!
