Thots On Missions Workers

There’s an old country song that says something like this:

“Mamma’s, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys.
Make ‘em be doctors and lawyers an such.”

The thought behind that line is clear – money with safety and comfort is better than danger and discomfort any time.  Usually, I would agree with that.  However, consider that without the danger and discomfort, we wouldn’t have:
  • Bridges that span great bodies of water.

  • Astronauts and the knowledge they share with us every day.

  • Modern defense systems

  • Freedom in America through many wars since the Revolution.

  • A land at all – since Columbus risked everything to find it.

  • Eternal life – since Jesus Christ was willing to die to give it to us!

So, when your children choose to serve Jesus Christ as a missionary in a foreign country which might be dangerous, just remember that your children will be serving the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, who, through life OR death, can make the work your children do of eternal value and of great service to humanity – something doctors and lawyers can not do.

Doctors heal a body that will eventually die anyway – so the service is temporary.  Lawyers prevent justice or injustice on that temporary body but not that soul – so the service is meaningless.  (Sorry, all you lawyers out there – you can’t get people off the hook with the Everlasting Judge – only Jesus can do that!)

That’s why I feel so privileged to have the opportunity to go to Romania April 17-26th.  I get to help lead a Bible Conference, preach encouragement to the believers there, and preach the gospel to the lost.  I trust it will encourage those who are giving their lives for what many in this world would consider useless and meaningless.  I trust my presence will help to lead several into an eternal relationship with the Savior of Mankind.  All the money in the world cannot do such things.

That’s why those with money should share to enable others to go – or to go themselves if they are so called by God for such a mission.
