Thots on Political Choices

People are talking about the next Presidential race – wondering who the candidates will be.  It’s too early to tell, but at this point, it looks like the pickings are slim on either side of the fence.  I would consider myself a member of the “religious right” and I find NO serious contenders on the scene.  The entire Democratic party is out because they neither support my beliefs nor my morals.  They reject the idea of my faith as being substantive or worthy of respect – not to mention they think it is simply something to be silenced.  The Republican party is under fire not because of their moral stands (which they are not taking as strongly in light of the upcoming election – even though it got them elected in the first place), but because of their vulnerability to scandalous allegations (even when they are false or trumped charges).  Foreign policy, fiscal policy, and other “non-moral” issues are up for debate.

But as a Christian, a Bible-believer, I am going to trust the ways of God.  As a pastor, I am supposed to apolitical – not taking sides.  That’s what they tell me.  I want you to know that I’m not on ANY political side.  I am on God’s side. God does NOT say how we should handle Iraq, Social Security, immigration or taxes.  But God DOES say that abortion, euthanasia and fetal stem cell research are murder.  God DOES say that homosexuality is an abomination to any society or people, and that those who practice it can change with His help.  Those who stand against God on these issues stand against God directly.  As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.  I will only vote for those who will also serve the Lord – for it is the hope of our nation’s survival.  By serving the Lord, the Lord will protect and bless our nation.  Oppose or reject the Lord is the same as opposing or rejecting His blessing and protection.  We do not want the Lord against us – there is no hope in that.

That’s why the moral issues of our elections are the basic issues that divide.  When candidates are on God’s side morally, they will get my vote.  If both are on God’s side morally, then I can vote for the candidate of MY choice, and I’ll shut up.  But when we as a society find ourselves faced with two candidates who are not on God’s side, morally, then I find myself in a bind.

Christians, that seems to be where our nation is headed.  The two front-runners are Hillary Clinton (whom we know does not stand on God’s side of the moral fence) and John McCain, III.  While it may seem he is OK because he’s Republican, look at what CNS news reports about him:

“McCain does not believe that the Republican Party should be advocating traditional moral values. He hopes to so co-opt mainline conservatism, while also gaining acceptance from liberals in the party.” (see “McCain Holds All the Cards”).

Christians – we need to pray that a genuine believer is able to climb to the top of the list of candidates or our moral policies will be reversed yet again and we’ll be finding our faith to be the object of increasing intolerance and ultimately violence.  I cannot support John McCain any more than I can support Hillary Clinton.  They neither represent my views.  They neither represent God’s views.

In my previous post, I said there’s a difference between the alienation of Muslims and Christians – the Muslims respond with violence.  Christians, we must respond with prayer, patience, love, and of course, with our Constitutionally protected and mandated right to vote.  We can and we must change the moral climate of our nation through these Biblically supported means.  We count – and we must continue to count in the next election.
