Passage: 1 Chronicles 16:25 - For great is the Lord,
and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.
Main Point: Why do we seek other gods? There are plenty. Money, power, fame, prestige, even our
families can become our gods. Anything
that becomes more important to us than the Living God of Heaven and Savior,
Jesus Christ, has become our god. Yet
these things all have their pros and cons.
With the Living God, there is a power that is far greater than anything
in creation. Why look within creation
any further? Praise the LORD above them
all!
- Lesson? God is Great - and greatly to be praised! Don't praise a statue. Don't praise a figment of our imagination (i.e., sun-god, buddha, etc.). These things are made by man, and whether traditionally or metaphorically endowed with great powers, those powers are miniscule compared to the real, living power of Almighty God. Let's be careful to honor Him above all others, and revere Him as Greatest in our life.
- Revelation about God? God's power is supreme, pre-eminent, and complete. With God, all things are possible; there is nothing impossible with God.
Devotional:
In a really cool
episode of iCarly, Carly's artist brother, Spencer, made her a gummy-bear lamp
for her birthday. It got so hot it
burned her bedroom/studio to ashes. The
insurance adjuster discovered that a very valuable ring was also destroyed, and
wrote them a check for $80K - and all of it was spent on a secret remodel of
her room. She loved it. The episode concluded with a question that
deserves an honest answer, "Is there anything money cannot do?"
Well, yes, in fact,
there are plenty of things money cannot do - so don't make it your god. Don't serve money or seek money. Money cannot buy God's favor, or save your
soul. Money cannot heal the terminally
ill. Money cannot make the dead to rise
again. Money cannot create the universe
or make new worlds or stars. Money
cannot make one righteous, moral, or holy.
Money cannot buy grace. Yet, God
can do all of this and so much more.
Beware anything that
we might hold as most important in our life unless it is Almighty God. We will have to account for that one. Rather, let us praise him above everything
else. Let us make His praises our life
mission. Let us delight in His glory!
