Just-A-Tho't On Materialism

As you have figured out (those of you who read this blog regularly), much of my entries are based on something I read earlier in the morning. Well, today is no different.

1Chronicles 5 shows how Jacob's (Israel's) prophecy concerning Reuben was that he would not be the recipient of the birthright which would normally belong to the firstborn because of his sin. Without going into detail concerning his sin, let me summarize a couple of things: he committed sexual sin and then when it was time to inherit his portion of the Promised Land, he chose instead the portion that would bring the most material wealth and comfort, thus not getting the biggest parcel of land, the most prestigious portion, or what have you. Now, in Chronicles, it shows how the tribe of Reuben was diminished even further.

The lesson: We get too wrapped up in materialism that we forget God and His will for our lives. We choose the comforts of the world to the blessings of God - even redefining the worldly comforts AS the blessings of God. They aren't always blessings, you know. If they fill our lives so completely that we no longer have time for Bible reading, prayer, worship, service, etc., then they are curses. We soon find ourselves, like Reuben, spiritually diminished, empty and wanting.
